This concept can be defined as what we may find socially “common”. So tangible and intangible goods that can be described as everyone’s property, such as knowledge, is a common.
How I brought myself to understand the concept of “commons” was by thinking of the word “common room”. So as a massive fan of good old HP… I just thought of the Gryffindor common room.
So the Gryffindor common room is literally a physical space that the Gryffindors share, they need to know the password to enter therefore it is something that they all have in common. The common room is like a private and personal space for just Gryffindors separating and distinguishing them from the other students at Hogwarts. Students from the other three houses are not permitted to enter the Gryffindor common room, they are only allowed in their own respective common rooms. Though on the topic of Harry Potter and commons… Hogwarts students have in common that they all attend the same school.
So here is a Venn Diagram of Hogwarts and the four houses.
So understanding the concept of commons also brings up the term “common sense”.
Common sense generally refers to knowledge and ideas that is widely known. Things that supposedly “make sense”. So in other words… LOGIC.
Though, this brings up the issue that not everyone thinks the same. Some things that seem logical to some people, may not seem so to others. There is also a notion of “street-smart” compared to “book-smart”. I mean… we all have that friend that scores HD’s but then needs help crossing the road!
So is common sense really that common?
Everyone thinks differently, though ironically… that is what we have in common.
It’s like that saying…
So with all that being said… I thought I would finish this blog post with an eCard!
